Is A Raw Pet Food Diet Right For Your Dog?An increasing number of pet owners have realized just how healthy and tasty a diet of raw pet food can be for their do. However, many people remain skeptical about feeding their pet raw meats, fruits, bones and vegetables, and after many years of buying and feeding packaged and processed pet foods, it is easy to understand why.
We wanted to get the opinions of some experts on the advantages and disadvantages of this type of diet.
Where did the concept of a raw pet food diet originate?
Racing greyhounds were at first the only animals that were fed a diet of raw pet food, until the BARF diet for pets was suggested by a vet, Ian Billinghurst, during the early 1930s.
BARF was an acronym for bones and raw food, although it could also just as well have stood for biologically appropriate raw food.
Why was it believed that pets would benefit from this diet?
Billnghurst believed that dogs would thrive if they were existing on a diet that could trace its origins back to a time when all dogs were forced to eat this type of diet as there was no alternative.
He maintained that a dog could only be truly healthy if it had a diet of raw meats, vegetables and fruits, and that dogs that relied on the more common domesticated and everyday diet will simply not be as healthy.
Why is the raw pet food so controversial?
There are pros and cons to this type of diet, just as there are to other diets, whether for a dog or for a human.
Some experts maintain that packaged dog food is the right way to feed your dog, while others maintain that the raw pet food diet is the only really healthy way to feed your dog. The pros and cons of the raw pet food diet are listed here:
